Hitachi High-Tech America Inspire STEM Education Outreach Program History & Capabilities
In 2011, Hitachi High-Tech America embarked on an ambitious mission: to inspire the next generation of innovative science pioneers through the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). As a global leader in the electron microscope industry, we worked with national organizations and leaders like Change the Equation and The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network, to develop a program that provides access to our portable Tabletop Scanning Electron Microscope in the classroom. This program provides an interactive hands-on, project-based experience for learning electron microscopy and nanotechnology.
As the world changes, The HTA Inspire STEM Education Outreach Program is committed to making an impact on being a resource for education. With this the Remote Expansion for virtual learning as been developed and launched for the upcoming school year.
The Inspire STEM Program’s ultimate goal is to inspire a new generation of achievement in science education and to ensure that students have the skills they need to meet the evolving demands of our future global workforce.
Real World Applications
We open the micro-world as an exciting, hands-on, active learning resource for students that can inspire a lifelong interest in STEM. Our teaching tools provide an opportunity to incorporate nanotechnology and microscopy into the classroom.
Agriculture
Biosciences uses TM Series microscopes to characterize and classify mites and insects to protect our food chain.
Material Science
TM series microscopes assist in developing nanomaterials such as carbon composites, which allow planes to have less weight, more structural integrity, and an ability to fly longer distances.
Medical
The TM Series is used in manufacturing better drug-eluting/polymeric coatings, which help increase patient longevity.
Thinking Through the SHIFT to Online Learning
The shift has happened, education is moving forward and the Hitachi High-Tech America’s Inspire STEM Education Program is adjusting to be more than a change leader in education but a key contributor within it. It was necessary to listen to the input of our communities and what was heard was clear: there is a forced shift in education to remote/online learning and teachers are overwhelmed and on information overload. To be effective, the Inspire STEM Education Outreach Program needed to figure out how to support educators as they transform brick and mortar classrooms in schools to immediate full time virtual learning environments with a blended learning environment to start the new school year, which will be both person to person and virtual teaching and learning.

Hitachi High-Tech America’s Inspire STEM Education Outreach Program Reacts to COVID-19 with Proactive Efforts
The Hitachi High-Tech America's Inspire STEM Education Outreach Program’s mission is to inspire the next generation of innovative science pioneers through the advancement of science, technology, engineering, and math. Our commitment to developing STEM initiatives that empower future scientists, engineers is one we take very seriously, especially now with the current COVID-19 Pandemic that has grounded the world and many children’s education to a standstill.
Our work in our communities continues. In the San Francisco, California area, Diablo College professors are using the SEM to support and create content for students currently continuing their classes online. Farther north in Portland, Oregon, our outreach program partner, Jennifer Wells, is collecting student samples to help image and analyze with EDS then digitally send the data to the students so they can continue to prepare for a statewide competition - ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) later in the year.
In Australia, the SEM’s have been moved to various universities. In Queensland, Australia the SEM will be utilized at The University of Queensland Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis CMM@UQ by Dr. Roger Wepf as part of the UQ efforts to combat the virus. In Victoria, an existing customer (S-4300SE), CSIRO – Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research has been asked to do urgent research on new materials for facemasks. Mr. Colin Veitch manager of the Microscopy Laboratory, will be using a Hitachi 4000PLUS SEM to do key research to help fight back the pandemic. This came about with Mr. Veitch knowing about the Inspire STEM Education Program being in the region and needing an SEM when their existing technology failed.
As COVID-19 is effecting us all, The Hitachi High-Tech America Inspire STEM Education Outreach Program is committed to continuing its work. This program is adapting with the time and gaining knowledge to provide innovating ways to help. This may be including online capability, live sessions for students or educators remotely and sharing resources to assist in providing materials for the virtual classroom that we are now seeing. Stay tuned for more information.
